They simply underestimated how much it would cost to actually develop all those 3D assets. The thought, care and love they put in to redesigning the characters and game play is top-notch. It's an almost-full 3D game that reimagines the formula. The customers were upset that the formula changed, and that it had so few levels, and that the story wasn't finished, and that the company pretended it was what they wanted it to be, and not what they were able to push out before going bankrupt. They were so scared of going bankrupt they mislead their customers.

And not only was it a risk, it was a big idea. I see why people complain about the lack of physics in Trine 2. I very much enjoyed the game, but with the balance being off I was often frustrated that I couldn't do what I tried to do, and couldn't fine alternatives because the puzzles were more intricate or required a specific character. Do people like it better than Trine 1? I don't get why. If people heard Trine 2 was out and everyone said how much they loved Trine 1 and new people gave Trine 2 a shot, I understand that it might not be fun for them.

Better upgrade system perhaps? The problem is it had the same floating physics/controls. The graphics better and the levels more detailed and creative. Trine 2, however, was better by every metric, and this made it worse. It was a key part of the game and it balanced well. But to me that was like complaining that Mario jumped, or that Sonic ran fast, or Civilization had too many details. People who complained that the controls were imprecise were correct. The controls are not precise, but it's all balanced well and that's just fine. Multiple solutions for different play styles/characters. It all balanced very nicely and was a fun action, platforming, puzzling, combat game. When I played Trine 1 I realized that the controls were somewhat imprecise.

I wonder if people who think Trine is frustrating, imprecise and not worth it only played Trine 2? I am now at the final level of Trine 3, and have heard only good things about Trine 4. At the time I had only played Trine 1 and was waiting for Trine 2 to come out on the Switch.

The rogue has a grappling hook that she can use to swing herself up to higher platforms or pull others down, while the wizard can move objects around or summon new ones, and the warrior just goes ahead and smashes everything in his path. At its core, it's a 2D physics puzzle platformer with three characters that you can constantly swap between on the fly to solve the various puzzles strewn about the levels.
